Description

Muffler Acoustic Design Software by AFD and SINUS Messtechnik GmbH

The muffler acoustic design software AFD 8001 – AcoustiCalc® by AFD/SINUS Messtechnik GmbH is a powerful tool for the design of single elements and complex systems of silencers and mufflers by determining the insertion loss and transmission loss of each component and the total system.

The working principle of the analysis software is based on the analytical description of the specific elements of ducts and mufflers as quadrupoles according to linear network theory.

By concatenation of the single elements, the acoustic behaviour of arbitrary systems of mufflers can be predicted with respect to defined operational conditions.

A typical software window is shown to the right:

Fields of application of muffler acoustic software

Consultants

The analysis software is beneficial for consulting engineers who acoustically design various systems of silencers and mufflers to achieve a legally required, or specified noise reduction of a sound emitting device or machines, such as:

  • exhaust systems
  • ventilation systems
  • air conditioning systems

The variety of applicable components of silencers and mufflers includes:

  • absorption mufflers
  • reflection mufflers
  • resonance mufflers
  • duct elements
  • specific installations

By choosing the right geometrical parameters and material parameters, the system of mufflers can be optimized with respect to the acoustical performance requirements.

Fabrication

The software is also very helpful to manufacturers who develop, fabricate and distribute collections of components of silencers and mufflers that are to be efficiently applicable to a wide operational range. In this case, mathematical descriptions for the acoustic efficiency of business-specific components can be developed and implemented.

The muffler software provides the following advantages:

  • It enables the creation of an in-house-product database containing the acoustic behavior of every single component of the muffler or silencer. This facilitates the selection of the right component to meet the specific acoustical requirements.
  • The accuracy of predicting the acoustic efficiency of specific components of mufflers can be optimized by acoustic measurements of fabricated components. The measurement results can then be directly applied to the customized computation model. These adjustments are specific to the fabricated component and enhance the accuracy of the product catalogue for designers and customers.
