Description

Sound Power Measured Using Sound Intensity

Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Systems + Sound Intensity Probe by SINUS Messtechnik GmbH

Sound intensity level measurements from which sound power levels may be calculated may be conducted using a two channel data acquisition system, such as Soundbook/NoisePAD, or a laptop computer plus either Apollo/Apollo Lite Boxes, all with SAMURAI software, or using the MATLAB Toolbox, all instruments by SINUS Messtechnik GmbH.

Sound intensity levels may be measured sequentially at locations defined by the relevant International Standards using the intensity probe, or may be measured using a scanning technique over the imaginary surfaces enclosing the source being measured.

The relevant international standards are:

ISO 9614-1: Acoustics; determination of sound power levels of noise sources using sound intensity; part 1: measurement at discrete points (Sound Intensity 1: partial sound power determination over a defined surface)

ISO 9614-2: Acoustics – Determination of sound power levels of noise sources using sound intensity – Part 2: Measurement by scanning (Sound Intensity 1: partial sound power determination over a defined surface)

ISO 9614-3: Acoustics – Determination of sound power levels of noise sources using sound intensity – Part 3: Precision method class 1 for measurement by scanning (Sound Intensity 1: partial sound power determination over a defined surface)

ANSI-S12-12: Engineering Method for the Determination of Sound Power Levels of Noise Sources Using Sound Intensity (partial sound power determination over a defined surface.)

ECMA-160: Determination of Sound Power Levels of Computer and Business Equipment using Sound Intensity Measurements; Scanning Method in Controlled Rooms (Sound Intensity 1: partial sound power determination over a defined surface)

DIN EN ISO 15186-2: Acoustics – Measurement of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements using sound intensity – Part 2: Field measurements

Software

Sound power level calculations and mapping of contours may be conducted using the SAMURAI Option: Sound Power (ISO9614), or custom scripts may be written using the MATLAB Toolbox.
